Stanford is a village situated 140 kms (90 minutes) from Cape Town in the Overberg region of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is 20 kms east of Hermanus and 20 kms north-east of Gansbaai. The village of Stanford was founded in 1857 and named after its founder, Sir Robert Stanford. Stanford is known for its beautifully preserved and renovated Cape Victorian and Edwardian styled houses and buildings. It maintains its old world peaceful atmosphere being the 3rd most preserved village in the Cape. It is characterised by quiet lanes and country roads. The Klein River runs through the village on its way to the Hermanus lagoon.
Stanford is considered a birding hotspot and boasts over 200 different bird species of which 30 are endemic to South Africa.
Some of the top attractions of Stanford include river cruises on the Klein River, kayaking, wine tasting at the local wine estates along the newly established wine route, and craft beer at the Birkenhead Brewery. The Kleinriver cheese farm makes award winning products.
Stanford is renowned for its local restaurants which prepare meals from locally produced ingredients. Mariana’s and Graze are award winning such restaurants.
Stanford’s situation gives easy access to whale-watching (Hermanus and De Kelders) as well as Shark-Cage diving at Gansbaai.
