Stanford’s “Leiwater” Irrigation System

Stanford 7210

Stanford has a “leiwater” system of water furrows that crisscross the village
and is used for garden irrigation. “Leiwater” (from the Afrikaans word lei, meaning “to lead”) refers to water that is guided through channels from a natural source in this case, the Klein River into the village. It’s a rare surviving example of a traditional irrigation method in a modern village. Helps maintain Stanford’s lush gardens and green character, even in dry seasons. Reflects the village’s heritage and sustainable water use practices.
