Gabriele Barnett

About the Artist Gabriele Barnett was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany in 1949 and at an early age she moved to South Africa with her family. Gabriele presently resides in Stanford in the Western Cape where she has retired from Corporate life. She has been painting professionally on and off in the past twenty years after studying art for 3 years with two professional artists and teachers in Johannesburg. Gabriele has open her Art Studio in Stanford where she paints and welcomes viewers and collectors of art. Please contact the artist by email gabriele.barnett@yahoo.com  for any enquiries about her paintings and art representatives in South Africa. About the Artwork: Gabriele mainly uses oil paints as her preferred medium but has also worked with acrylics and watercolours. She has travelled extensively throughout South Africa and also spent time in Europe. Her photos and sketches act as inspiration for many of her paintings which she completed in her studio. She is particularly inspired by light and shade believing that the light in Africa has a quality lacking in Europe and plays with light to change the mood of a scene. In her landscapes, Gabriele intends to evoke a “sense of Africa ” rather than a literal representation of the “locale” and she equates her work to that of a novelist who can invent a situation with characters as though it were a real event. She takes reality and interprets it into subjective event. Gabriele feels that her compositional variations are endless and is often inspired by the mood of a place or situation. Some people have stated that her scenes remind them of where they have been or situations and emotions they have experienced. Her paintings are not restricted to one subject matter such as landscapes or still-life but she feels the need to express whatever moves her to express the feeling in her paintings, being especially moved by her love of horses and their grace and beauty.  She is also an avid art collector and a collector of carvings and handmade crafts.

Rural Education South Africa

Who we are Rural Education SA (RESA) is a program developed by the Fynbos Community Foundation. It is an alternative education model adapted for rural children. The Fynbos Community Foundation (FCF) was officially registered as an NPO in November 2012, although informal involvement in rural education dates back to 2005. The FCF has developed and implemented the Rural Education SA (RESA) program, to address the educational, social and vocational needs of rural children in South Africa. It is a pro-active intervention to address many barriers these communities experience in education. The ultimate goal is to equip our children to become self-sufficient, well rounded individuals. What we do: Establishment of Private Schools and Career Schools in rural areas that provides quality education, dietary support, sport participation, spiritual and social guidance, therapeutic intervention where necessary as well as recreational activities. The RESA programme caters for transport with 4 busses to and from school, provides nutritious breakfast and lunch and most importantly, provides rich and individualised educational, cultural and sporting instruction and assistance, in the lives of children who have not had the opportunity to access their right to a decent education. RESA Schools Fynbos Academy on Langverwacht farm 20km outside Stanford Hoopland Academy in Stanford Blouvlei Academy outside Wellington RESA Career Schools In 2017 FCF established two Career Schools for young people between the ages of 14 and 18 years of age where the focus is on both academic and practical development. This is a 4 year course where learners are enabled to qualify in preparation for entering the employment market, or equipped to engage in entrepreneurial activity. Get involved If you have time to spare and a willing heart to serve then please do get in touch with us as we would love to hear from you.  We have a head office in Victoria Street next to Spar in Centro Jardim. Goodwill Mountain Farm

We are blessed with the most beautiful location for unwinding and connecting with nature. Our farm is located on the side of a mountain with rolling views over the Stanford Valley and only 20 mins drive from the Sea. Here you will find an abundance of space, a myriad of life and the silence to quieten even the busiest of minds. Go for nature walks, birdwatching and even whale watching – or simply kick back with some locally grown wine and enjoy the plethora of stars. Our cottages are restored labourers’ cottages which we have renovated to create a space for you to be completely as you are. They are set among beautiful old pine trees where fallow deer come in the mornings to hang out with the horses and take their fill of the lush grass surrounding our rainwater dam. The silence and tranquility is abundant and our best efforts have been made to provide you with a place to unwind and forget about the hum-drum of daily life. The Villa was until recently our private home and it has been renovated and decorated to retain that feeling. It is set high in the mountains where the fynbos is ancient and the sunbirds rule. Here you can completely forget that there are other people around, while remaining a mere 7 minutes drive from town. Our cottages and The Villa all come with linen, towels and cookware. There is private parking and braai facilities, and some firewood is provided. Your pets are very welcome too! Please note:
Bookings over long weekends and High Season must be for at least 2 nights.
Single night stays over weekends will be subject to a single night supplement (50% of one night accommodation cost) THE VILLA The Villa is an exquisite and unique house built on a dam in the mountains. Here you are completely immersed in nature and the view is incomparable, whether you enjoy it sitting on the veranda overlooking the dam or in the spacious lounge with huge windows. The private dam is wonderful for swimming in and the shaded veranda is perfect for an afternoon braai. The Villa sleeps 8-10 people, with four bedrooms as well as a secondary lounge with daybeds that can be converted into beds. ‘Fire’ is the master bedroom and has an en-suite bathroom with a shower as well as a large bath tub. ‘Earth’ has an adjacent bathroom with a shower, and ‘Water’ and ‘Air’ share a bathroom. ‘Water’ also boasts a private veranda, perfectly angled to enjoy the sunset. In the four bedrooms all the beds can be either twins or Kings depending on your preference. The kitchen is fully equipped with quality cookware, oven, stove and microwave. There is a separate scullery with an extra gas cooker and a secondary fridge. Much care has been taken to furnish the Villa and the feel is much more of a private luxurious house than rental accommodation. Art by local artists adorn the walls and many of the pieces of furniture are family heirlooms. Wifi is provided free of charge, as well as natural, chemical-free toiletries hand-made locally. The Villa at Goodwill Mountain is open for the ultimate self-isolation

African Tree Essences & Mists

The African Tree Essences are remedies made from the flowers and leaves of the ancient trees of Platbos ~ Africa’s southernmost forest. Made in the traditions of the Bach Flower Remedies, the African Tree Essences are solarized infusions of the tree flowers of Platbos. Known as vibrational remedies, the tree essences work on the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual bodies. Homeopathic in nature, the tree essences hold the vibrational blue print of the age-old trees of Platbos. Recent scientific research into trees and forests verifies what energy healers have long held to be true: that all trees have their own unique vibration (as does all matter). Trees, however, because of their still, peaceful nature and great antiquity, have incredibly high, stable energy fields. When we come into contact with them, they give our energy field what has been described as a “Rebooting” – much like what happens when you turn your computer off and then on again when it is malfunctioning. Via the element of our body’s water content (up to 70% in a healthy adult) the trees’ high vibrations help to realign our vibrational field back to its natural, healthy norm. The Tree Mists The Tree Mists are handcrafted by Melissa Krige, producer of the African Tree Essences. By blending the therapeutic infusions of her African Tree Essenceswith oils derived from the wild Fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom, she has created a truly unique product that captures the essence of Africa. The essential oil blends for the thirteen different Tree Mists are each carefully selected to enhance and amplify the actions of the African Tree Essences. A further synergy is added in the form of a colour essence – these are vibratory in nature and carry the energetic properties of the particular colour. Combined, these create a tapestry of healing that echoes the energy, scent and colour of the rich forest atmosphere from whence they originate. The harmonising energies of the Tree Mists engage directly with the electromagnetic field that surrounds the body, instantly raising the vibrations. Each Tree Mist enhances a different quality of being. For example, the Cherry Wood enhances calmness and peace, whilst the Wild Peach fosters confidence, courage and focus. Retreats and workshops Practitioner’s Training Course Attune to the Trees & Learn How to Use these Forest Essences for Healing This course will provide you with a solid foundation for working with the African Tree Essences and the Ancient Forest Tree Mists from Platbos Forest. In addition, you will experience the deep and profound healing of the forest in a safe and protected environment. Sacred Forest Retreats Experience the Healing Trees of Platbos First Hand Time spent exploring the forest and the nature of the different trees will reveal your “Totem”or Teacher Tree – a particular tree that beckons and offers personal messages of insight and support. Shinrin Yoku ~ Forest Bathing The Medicine of Trees Shinrin-yoku translates as “Forest Bathing” – the mindful practice of absorbing the forest atmosphere through the senses: touch, sight, scent, sound and taste. Most people would agree that spending time in a forest imparts a sense of relaxation and well-being. Speaking personally, having lived and worked beneath the Platbos Forest canopy since 2005, I have never felt healthier and more at home in the world. My practical experience of trees and forests verifies their beneficial effects on us. Through attuning to their powerful energy fields, my understanding and experience of the forest has further deepened and expanded to encompass the spiritual dimension of trees. You can make a difference by joining our “100 Club” by setting up a monthly contribution of 100.00 Rand – or any other amount smaller or greater. The day to day running costs rely on our regular committed donors. Overseas contributions from some countries can be sent in a tax efficient manner – please contact us for details. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact us. We are always happy to show visitors around our school to enable them to meet our teachers and demonstrative and affectionate children.

Sara Abbott

I have loved painting and in particular, drawing, since I was very young while being brought up on a farm together with my sister, in Kenya. Loved the outdoors, riding, fishing, taking photographs and being surrounded by animals. That is probably why I find them as a subject for my art more fun than still life! I have not been formally trained but have learnt from some very talented artists. Currently I am fortunate to be studying with Greg Kerr and look forward to next year’s exciting new challenge.

Land Based Whale Watching

De Kelders is 20km from Stanford along the R43. De Kelders “A good spot to spot whales” is putting it mildly. Usually to spot a whale from the shore, you have to check the ocean, wait for a while and -maybe- see a black spot in the distance that might be a whale. No such thing in De Kelders. This is the place that the Southern Right Whales call home! You don’t have to look for them. This is simply where they are between July and December. The whale you will see in abundance is the Southern Right Whale. These whales come to these shores every year to mate, give birth and play until they depart to the ice cold waters off Antarctica for the rest of the year. The whales regularly come within a few meters of the shore. Standing on top of one of the cliffs or rock formations along the ocean, you can easily spot the whales cruising by below you. Walker Bay Nature Reserve 17 km of rocky and sandy coast, excellent whale watching. Permit and 4×4 required. Alternatively excellent whale watching only 20 kilometers away at De Kelders, Gansbaai or 21 km away in Hermanus.

Raka Wine

The Raka brand was named after Piet Dreyer’s black fishing vessel. Piet’s first love has always been the sea. For some 36 years he braved the storms and challenges of the coast, ever in search of the best catch. It is with this same passion that the Dreyer family now pursue the art of winemaking. With the rich blessing of earth and elements, the help of a dedicated workforce, the enthusiasm of winemaker Josef Dreyer and the advantages of a modern gravity flow cellar, Piet Dreyer produces his award-winning Raka wines. What makes the Stanford Wine Route stand apart from the rest? Authentic country life makes our wine route stand out. Stanford is a village with a relaxed lifestyle where locals and visitors meet and greet in a ‘klein dorpie’ atmosphere. The same goes for the wine farms on the route; you may well find the owner driving the tractor or helping to offload the day’s harvest at the cellar. No airs and graces, no glitz and glamour or touristy gimmicks; just good clean wine! Raka Wines offer friendliness, family involvement and passion for our wine. Five members of our family of six are closely involved with the growing, making and marketing of Raka wine, while the sixth is an ardent supporter and an ambassador for Raka wine. We have a variety of aspects and soil types which enable us to grow many different cultivars (11 in all) and we produce 15 different wines. Closed Sundays, Christmas Day and Easter Friday. Open weekdays 9:00 – 17:00, Sat 10:00 – 15:00. Tours by arrangement.

Cycling

Discover Stanford by bike. The unique little village of Stanford, overlooked by the moody slopes of the Klein River Mountains, lies just inland of False Bay, forming the tip of a triangle with the coastal towns of Hermanus and De Kelders. Peaceful and largely unaffected by change, Stanford is an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, restaurants and coffee shops, and the list of activities for a largely rural village exceeds one’s expectations. Like many of the Overberg towns, Stanford originated as a farm, de Kleine Riviers Valey (the original spelling), and the tree-lined streets today, filled with historical buildings, are testimony to the largely English influence that makes Stanford the third most historically important village in the Western Cape. The heart of Stanford surrounding the market square – used as a venue for a monthly country market and for the annual Boxing Day Cricket Match – was proclaimed a South African Heritage area in 1995. The original farmhouse of De Kleine Riviers Valey, built in 1785, is one of the oldest houses still in existence in the Cape Overberg and the beautiful stone Church is thought to have been built in the 1700’s as well, although the records have unfortunately been lost.

Welgesind

Welgesind is the youngest member of the Stanford Wine Route. The grapes are grown, harvested and turned into wine on the farm, and tastings are  fun and intimate as Chris and Amanda taste and chat to visitors. The tasting room is in the cellar which is below the farm house on the slopes of the Klein  River Mountains. Chris and Amanda have made Welgesind Romanse 2017 (Blanc de Noir made from Shiraz grapes), and Welgesind Mechanic, a 2015 Shiraz and their delight in sharing their wines makes wine tasting at Welgesind a casual and unrushed experience.

Sir Robert Stanford Estate

WINES Wine has been produced here since the 1890s. All 10 000 vines had been removed in 1935 by the son of the original Huguenot farmer, Isak du Toit, to end the decadent wine and witblits sprees. The owner of the majestic Sir Robert Stanford Estate, Jan Malan, started the millennium by putting back what was always there – glorious rows of vines producing the noble white and red varietals.

Walker Bay Estate and Birkenhead Brewery

Home of Walker Bay Wines and Birkenhead Brewery BEERS & WINES Walker Bay Estate is the first estate in the Southern Hemisphere to produce beer and wine on the same estate. Premium craft beers, cider and boutique wines are made to exacting standards by our diligent brew master and passionate winemaker. The estate is named after the famous British troopship H.M. Birkenhead that floundered on the coast close to the estate in 1852 on the 26th of February. Founded in 1997, the brewery currently produces six craft beers. Walker Bay is known as one of the coolest wine wards with an average summer day temperature of 28 °C. The moderating effect of our close proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean and the cool SE and SW sea breezes allows for the formation of high fruit flavours and acidity in the grapes as well as leading to optimum phenolic ripeness and lower alcohols in the wines. Our first wine was produced under the Walker Bay Vineyards label in 2007 and 2012 was a landmark year as we produced our first estate wine in our newly built state-of-the-art winery. The Stanford Wine Route offers individualistic yet down to earth tasting experiences and good hospitality. Gumboots to Gucci – all are welcome! And at the Birkenhead Brewery, besides doing boutique Walker Bay wine tasting , we also offer craft beer and cider. Brewery and cellar tours are available by appointment. Mary-Lynne Grant - Jain Acupressure and Magnet Therapy

Experience 1 – 11/2 hour sessions to help bring vitality back as well as relieve pain in the body through acupressure (not acupuncture) and magnet therapy. These methodologies release blockages in the organs as well as the circulatory, endocrine and nervous systems therefore balancing the body in a safe and tension free way. This work also gets the energy (chi) flowing along the meridians. These sessions begin with a foot bath – an ancient and sacred practice – followed by a massage (same applies to hands if preferred). We then work through the reflex points to notice what needs attention in the body and get to the source of what may be creating challenges that affect the emotions, the physical, the energetic field etc. The magnet application works wonders for pain caused by old injuries. I work from my home in Stanford – a welcoming and peaceful environment. A spare room is available for those wanting to stay for ongoing daily treatments should you be from out of town. Provided in this restful space are natural products that are biodegradable and foods that are organic. The kitchen is equipped with a juicer, high speed blender, fresh organic vegetables and organic superfoods for delicious healthy living. Through natural remedies, healing is simplistic and understandable, giving one the power to help heal oneself. Sessions times: 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00 Cash or EFT welcome. Regretfully, no card facilities.

Panthera Africa

Panthera Africa is a non-profit company founded by Lizaene Cornwall and Cathrine S. Nyquist. The name Panthera Africa is inspired by the passion Lizaene and Cathrine have for the four pantheras; panthera leo – the lion, panthera pardus – the leopard, panthera tigris – the tiger and panthera onca – the jaguar. Panthera Africa is an environmentally friendly sanctuary for any captive bred big cats where they will be protected and prosper for the rest of their lives, without any trading or breeding taking place. Panthera Africa has found its 40 hectare paradise in Stanford, South Africa, with a beautiful home for rescued big cats. One of Panthera Africa’s the most important objectives is to be an educational platform for creating awareness of the conditions big cats face in captivity worldwide, both in zoos, circuses and the South African canned hunting industry. The most powerful tool in the world is knowledge, so through educational visits, corporate team building and presentations, Panthera Africa aims to enhance the understanding of the big cats’ critical situation. With the public eye focusing heavily on animal welfare, and new laws being implemented against animal cruelty, the immediate need for sanctuaries like Panthera Africa is prominent. By working closely with large organisations, Panthera Africa will be a safe haven for the big cats in need of rescue, where they can prosper and have the best captive lives possible under the African sun. Panthera Africa believes in the connection between environmental and wildlife conservation, and aims to become the first “green” sanctuary in South Africa, and run solely on solar energy. Don Gelato ice cream parlour, coffee shop & trattoria

DON GELATO  is inspired by the deep desire to share the flavours and naturalness of authentic Italian gelato. To make our delicious gelato we use the original technique and authentic recipe. Don Gelato supports local farmers and offers the delightful taste of each season made by selected organic ingredients supplied by the Overberg region . “Ice cream”  is an enjoyable modern-day commercial version and is mass-produced worldwide. “Gelato”  is homemade and follows the delicious original age-old Italian recipe and technique. The name has remained Italian due to its origin : GELATO At the time all the ingredients were fresh, natural, organic : milk from freely roaming cows, fresh eggs from free-range chickens, fresh products and freshly harvested fruit which were obviously all free of pesticides, chemical treatments and preservatives that did not exist when gelato was first made! Today Don Gelato apply the same concept  in its production at The House of Don Gelato  in the Heritage Stanford Village . Gelato contains no artificial flavourings or colorants, and no air is added to our low-fat natural ingredients . All our gelato is made right in front of your eyes in The House of Don Gelato at 23 Queen Victoria Street in Stanford. Don Gelato is a registered trade mark of Delitaly Pty (Ltd.) Gelato is a wonderfully refreshing dessert, which is well known for its nutritious properties as a substitute for any meal because it contains all the necessary protein, carbohydrates, minerals and salts . Friends are welcome to share the pure joy of healthy authentic “gelato” either in our secluded garden where silence and peace are the characteristics elements of the Garden and where children can play safely, or in the cosy rooms of The House of Don Gelato  where you can enjoy sweet or savoury Breakfast, Italian Espresso and Cappuccino, and selected organic Teas paired with the pleasure of pastry mignon… Watch first hand while we transform our natural ingredients into  Don Gelato’s indulgent creations. Gelato, homemade Italian Cakes and Pâtisserie mignon, can be purchased at The House of Don Gelato. On weekends The House of Don Gelato , with its quiet and peaceful garden, serves Italian Cuisine with light and vegetarian meals deliciously garnished, local tasty venison dishes, free range eggs, stone ground flour homemade bread baked daily, amazing desserts …and, of course, unique traditional Italian gelato cups with special homemade toppings or fresh seasonal fruit . The Trattoria also showcases the best of Italian flair and authentic cooking made with locally sourced ingredients. Wines from various Italian regions are available and will be recommended as accompaniments for various regional dishes. enjoy the cosy dining room with its fireplace on cooler evenings, or the courtyard with doors flung open on warmer evenings.

African Infused Gourmet Foods

African Infused Gourmet Foods is a new business based in Stanford making pestos and chutneys that contain African botanicals. When pondering where the next global food trend might come from, I automatically expected it to arrive from overseas. (For example, we’ve recently had pulled pork from the southern United States, kimchi from Korea, ramen from Japan, quinoa from Peru, and pad thai from, well, Thailand.) Then one day I thought: don’t we have anything local that could compete with the best in the world? This started me on a journey and the answer is turning out to be much more exciting than I had dared imagine. And as a result I named my brand African Infused Gourmet Foods. My aim has become to help celebrate the sophisticated indigenous flavours Africa has to offer the world. So far I have developed a range of four preserves: Orange & baobab Chutney – baobab’s lemony tartness combined with lemon zest and juice produces notes of bushveld and marmalade. Superb with chicken, ostrich, vegetarian sosaties or a strong cheese. Strawberry & African chilli Chutney – tiny African bird’s eye chillis are hot and spicy, adding a kick to the strawberries. Think sweet chilli jam meets sour strawberry coulis. Excellent with cheese, curries, roasts, on a sandwich or as a dipping sauce. Ginger, apple & fynbos honey Chutney – local Elgin apples are infused with the faint smokiness of the fynbos honey, the zing from homemade preserved ginger and a bouquet of spices. Brilliant with roast crackling, roast veg, baked potatoes or as a glaze. African braai Relish – with its rooibos, honeybush, buchu and suntanned tomatoes, this relish elevates the traditional braai or shisha nyama to a whole new level. Also delectable on a vegan burger or in a vegetarian lasagna. African Infused Gourmet Foods are available at the Hermanus Country Market (near the high school) every Saturday morning and at Klein River Cheese or from Di Möhr at (028) 341 0742.

Bugler's Cottage

Accommodation

Bugler’s cottage is one of the original labourer’s cottages on Sir Robert’s Stanford’s farm, and dates back to the early 1860s. It is the only cottage in Stanford that is still true to its original form, except for internal changes and the addition of a bathroom at the back. It was lovingly restored in 2012 and made structurally sound after internal support structures were removed as people grew taller over the years and would bump their heads against the low beams! Some of the “boer-maak-‘n-plan” methods have been retained for posterity, such as the barbed wire and “hanebalke” to try and keep the roof together. This one-bedroom cottage oozes charm whilst taking you back in history. It can accommodate a family of 3, as there is a daybed (and a Queen Anne stove!) in the lounge area. The bathroom consists of a shower and bath. There is a large patio/ braai area and a still to be fixed jacuzzi in the garden. The property is enclosed with secured off-street parking and is pet-friendly. R200 surcharge for midweek single night stay Mid-week special rates apply. ONLY 2-day bookings over weekends, and 3-day bookings over long weekends. Min 5 night stay from 20 December – 3 January

B's Cottage

Accommodation

It looks old, but B’s cottage was built in the 1990s exactly in accordance with a plan of an original Cape fisherman’s cottage. Even architects have been fooled, as the windows and doors had to be made by hand to keep with the original style. B’s Cottage is undoubtedly Stanford’s favourite get-away. It is set in a picturesque English garden with lovely views to the Klein River Mountains across the village green. It shares the 1 400m2 garden with its larger sister, Dove Cottage, but they are each screened to provide maximum privacy. It has a large fireplace (a favourite with the umpteen repeat guests who sometimes don’t even venture outdoors in winter!), an outside braai, a fully equipped kitchen (except for an oven) and a shower/bathroom. The double bed in the loft completes the scene. This is a pet-friendly establishment, and there is an enclosed and partially covered ‘doggie’ area that leads from the kitchen. The entire property is fenced, and off-street parking is provided. RATES: Please click on the red Book Now button above for a live availability calendar and rates. R200 surcharge for midweek single night stay ONLY 2-day bookings over weekends, and 3-day bookings over long weekends. Min 5 nights from 20 December – 3 January
